DEN 6 - FUN FIRST!

8-23-2001

TO: Den 6 Webelos and their Adult Leaders

FROM: Bill Kloeckner, Leader, Den 6

SUBJECT: Adult Involvement, Activity Badges, Meeting Times and Leadership

1. It pleases me greatly to observe the Scouts of Den 6 proceed beyond their achievements as Bear Cubs into the challenges presented by the Webelos Advancement Trail. Webelos is a fun adventure providing many opportunities for the Scouts to work with their adult leaders. This program will only work if the adult leaders are involved in the advancement of their Scout. Adult leaders, please open the Webelos Scout book to page 415 and notice that the first requirement of the Webelos Badge is a reading assignment for you. Please complete this assignment and then review the contents of the Webelos Scout Book with your Scout.

2. There are 20 activity badges. Scouts who attended Webelos Camp earned some of the requirements for the Aquanaut, Craftsman, Readyman, Naturalist and Outdoorsman activity badges. Scouts are to report the completion of an activity me. An activity is complete when the Scout’s adult leader has approved the scoreboard at the end of the description of each activity in the Webelos Scout Book. My goal is for Den 6 to earn one activity badge per month. I need adult leaders to select an activity and lead the Den meetings for a month. Please call me and tell me what activity you wish to present and what month is best for you. I attach an analysis of all the Webelos Activities. Please choose one that falls under the "Den Meeting" category of Place Activity Best Accomplished.

3. My goal is to have Den 6 meet at Hazel Grove Elementary School on Thursday afternoons at 4:15 p.m. The meetings will last one and one half hours. The adult leader responsible for presenting the activity for the month will also provide snacks and refreshments. We will not meet on the week of the Pack Meeting, which is generally the fourth Thursday of each month (it moves around due to Thanksgiving in November, Christmas in December, Pinewood Derby in January, and Blue & Gold in February.)

4. As Webelos Scouts, we are gradually taking on more and more responsibility to develop leadership skills and instill Scouting values. Ask your sons what activities appeal to them and use your three Den meetings to stimulate that interest in the other Scouts. I am open to everything. I want more hikes and more camping. We will make plans as the heat of the summer lets up. We must master effective and efficient communication - I want every Scout to have an e-mail account and check it at least weekly. I want to see Den 6 Scouts wear proper uniforms to school on Thursdays. The uniform, values and the integrity demonstrated by the good behavior of the Scouts will be prove to be a well spring of pride and self-confidence. Get ready for fun! You and your sons imagination and creativity are our only limitation!
